There's No Stopping Taxidermy Week

In keeping with Tal's definition of taxidermy....

(thanks to Justin Sullivan at Getty)

How do you feel about this ad?

Saw this commercial while watching Gossip Girl last night (don't judge) and it stopped me dead in my tracks. There's no sound and by the end I realized I hadn't been breathing the entire time I watched it. Seeing a corporation appropriate video art to sell sneakers might turn your stomach, but isn't this brilliant advertising? Thoughts?

Publikum Calendar

I took a trip to AIGA today, and saw this lovely show on the second floor - it's the Publikum Calendar - a Serbian project that collects 12 designers from around the world to each design a month for the calendar. In order from top: Big Active (pictograms), Garth Walker (Deer), (to come- grafitti), Marian Bantjes (white/silver), (rest to come).

The End is Here

OMG. I need some optimism right about now. The first two, "Life After People", are part of a plastic display that changes image as you move from left to right. The last two are fake Cloverfield posters, I think.

Weight Watchers Diet Ads

I am obsessed with these diet ads. I find that whenever I see something that's pure type in our image-saturated environment, my eyes dart to it immediately, no matter what it is. Unless it's taxidermed kittens.

Author Photo of the Day

Tom Wolfe is ECSTATIC about his new publisher!

Heartbreaking

I love snow globes and miniatures, which is why I almost died when I discovered the work of Walter Martin and Paloma Munoz. They have a show at the PPOW gallery (http://www.ppowgallery.com/exhibitions/2008WMPM/) in NY 1/10-2/9. Check it out!

Alison Jackson

This photographer rox! Thanks, Miss Travis.

Friday Music Break

You too will want to hold hands with Robert Redford when you listen to John Barry's luscious theme from Out of Africa. Music starts as soon as the plane takes off:

Doesn't the first part sound like a old James Bond movie?

Chisholm Larsson Poster Shop

Passed by this poster shop and couldn't help going in and shooting everything. The guys inside were really sweet too and let me have my way with them. Check their collection out on:

No One is Gay Anymore!

I passed by a local video store that had these charming boxes displayed in the window. It made me think. Three out of the four men on these boxes were gay or bi. And they were all top-selling leading men of Hollywood in the 30s and 40s. Of course they were all in the closet. Now it's 70 years later. And our leading men are still in the closet. Unless no one is gay anymore.

Sub-Freezing Advertising

I took a walk today and found these! I'm particularly impressed by the Ritz ad - it's so cute and 60s-ish. Click on it to enlarge - the copy is hilarious.

Door Handle of the Year

You can caress this loveliness at the Marc Ecko store in Chelsea - 8th Ave between 17 &18. There are some amazing paintings inside done by Marc he'self, but the manager wouldn't let me take pictures. They also have a cool chandelier made of beer bottles, and a tree that grows partially in the store and then breaks out to the outside through a hole in the glass ceiling. Girls, you've gotta check this place out.
