That Sahre cover for Zombie, Spaceship, Wasteland is terrific. Hell's Horizon is smashing too.
I don't want to sound pessimistic but 2010 was not a very creative year and 2011 does not look better seeing these banal covers.
The only thing I can't wait for : the book cover for the upcoming Murakami's 1Q84 by Knopf this fall...
Gould, it's not always about something being over the top original. Sometimes solving something elegantly within the scope of what the general public will respond to is just what the doctor ordered. At the end of the day it's not about pleasing a few designers, but selling books. All these covers are strong and have great presence in the stores if you have seen them in person.
It is true that there are probably many covers that have a similar flare as any number of these, but in the end it's got little to do with a lack of originality on the designers part in as much as what the marketing folks feel will sell.
I thought 2010 was a smashing year in cover design. Some real strong covers came out last year by both the old legends in this industry and a bunch of younger cats. Next year it will be even better.
