ah, yes. Very french. I love covers that make a face out of ordinary objects. That would be a cool series of posts to explore...
There are some really interesting variations on this that I was tempted to post, but I didn't want to dilute the thunder of this beautiful cover. I'll sneak it into here, though:

oh yes. I've seen that one. Very cute. But this cover definitely has a stronger graphic appeal to me. There must be hundreds. I know Paul Rand did it a bunch—maybe not for book covers, but for advertisements...

I love Roberto's work. I remember attending a lecture of his when I was in school a few years ago. I think he definitely had some influence on me wanting to get into book design and typography.
